This species only grows up to 1 inch (2 cm), but it packs a powerful punch with its bright, red-orange body that is slightly translucent with a coppery sheen. Unlike many other nano fish, ember tetras are relatively outgoing, especially in large groups, and won't dart away as soon as you approach their tank.
Tank Size. Though diminutive in size, ember tetras are a shoaling species. They don't tend to form tight schools but group loosely and thus need ample space to swim. They can be kept in nano tanks as small as 5 gallons, but frequent water changes will be required to maintain high water quality.
Ember tetras should be kept in acidic water with a pH near 6.6, and although their native habitat has very soft water they have adapted quite well to a wide range of hardness (5–17 dGH). The recommended temperature range is between 23–29 °C (73–84 °F).
