These plates and sponges are easily rinsed with clean aquarium water. We recommend that you keep the bio-plates, carbon-plates or block sponges free of debris buildup. To maximize the effectiveness of the filter, we recommend replacing the bio-plates, carbon-plates or block sponges every 30-45 days. each Model of this power filter offers adjustable flow rates, and the largest model comes with dual spillways
